THE CHARITIES
The Salters’ Institute
Reg. No. 328463
The Company’s flagship charity, The Salters’ Institute, founded in 1918, is one of the country’s leaders in the field of science curriculum development and its influence stretches across the world.
Its original purpose was to assist young chemists returning from the war who wished to continue with their chemistry studies (see Company History). The Institute aims to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young, and to encourage careers in the teaching of chemistry and in the UK chemical and allied industries.
The Institute’s three core activities are: Salters’ Chemistry Camps, Salters’ Festivals of Chemistry and Curriculum Development.
Salters’ Chemistry Camps
The Salters’ Chemistry Camps are residential events that are held at universities throughout the UK, each for fifty 15 year olds, prior to taking GCSE (or equivalent). Activities include practical chemistry in the labs and exciting lecture demonstrations. The Camps were established in 1998.
Salters’ Festivals of Chemistry
The Salters’ Festivals of Chemistry for 11-13 year olds are held at local universities. Activities include two practical challenges and a fun lecture with fun prizes and certificates. Approximately 55 events are held annually, at over 45 different universities across the UK and Ireland.
Salters’ Curriculum Development
Salters’ Curriculum Development is undertaken by the University of York Science Education Group and includes Salters Advanced Chemistry, Salters Horners Advanced Physics, Salters-Nuffield Advanced Biology and the GCSE course Twenty First Century Science – a course funded by The Nuffield Foundation, The Salters’ Institute and The Wellcome Trust.
Salters’ National Awards for Science Technicians
The National Awards for Science Technicians in partnership with the Association for Science Education, the Institute of Biology, the Institute of Physics, the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry, were established in 2002. The biennial awards are open to science technicians in schools and colleges who have a total of five or more years’ experience (either full-time or part-time). Up to four awards each worth £250 are offered.
The Salters’ Institute Prizes, Grants and Events
Other Institute activities include: The Salters’ Graduate Prizes, Salters-Nuffield Advanced Biology Prizes, Salters Advanced Chemistry Prizes, Salters Horners Advanced Physics Prizes, Salters’ City & Guild Prizes and a number of grants are available for schools offering the Salters’ A-Level courses to students. Annual events include a Seminar hosted on behalf of the Chemical Education Group (the eleven major institutions involved with Chemical Education), and the Salters’ Institute Awards Ceremony, which is held in November of each year at Salters’ Hall.
