We
were delighted to receive a large number of nominations from which
it has been very difficult to make the final selection of students,
as all the applications were of such a high standard. Fifty
students have been selected for each Camp. Students not
selected are on a reserve list and will be contacted if a vacancy
becomes available.
However,
it is with great disappointment that the Camps due to be held
at Heriot-Watt University have been cancelled due to an unanticipated
lab refurbishment in the summer. We look forward to having
them back on board in 2010. Consequently, the number of
Camp places available this year is reduced.
If
you require any further information about the Camps, please contact
the Camps Administrator on:

CEG
Seminar 2009
Tuesday 3
March 2009, Salters' Hall
"The
Teaching and Learning of Science at Key Stage 3"
The Chemical Education
Group was set up in 1991 to bring the leaders of
major institutions together to consider wider policy issues. It
has run annual major seminars since 1993 on specific issues of
concern in science education. The Group consists of Institutions
closely linked to science education. The group holds an annual
seminar to discuss a current topical subject concerning chemical
education.
This
year's Seminar focused on "The Teaching and Learning of Science
at Key Stage 3" For some time there has been concern about the
teaching and learning of science at Key Stage 3. Research seems
to show clearly that many students lose their enthusiasm for science
during the 11-14 years, and begin to see a career in science as
'not for them'. It is not at all clear that the changes introduced
in 2008 to the national curriculum KS3 programme of study will
solve these problems.
