Role of Teacher Mentor
A University Host, a Lead Teacher and five Teacher Mentors are assigned to each Camp. Fifty students (Year 10 or equivalent) are selected for each Camp.
The Teacher Mentor is expected to work closely with the other members of the team and will be supported by the Lead Teacher both prior to and during the Camp.
Key Responsibilities
- Attendance at a one-day pre-Camp meeting held at the Host University in Spring. In some cases, this may be a Saturday meeting
- Preparation and leadership of a practical activity to last approximately 3 hours. Production of activity worksheets for students, notes for teachers and laboratory requirements to be provided by an agreed date
- Attendance at a three-day Chemistry
Camp in June/July/August at the Host University. Teacher
Mentors are accommodated with the students in a University
Hall of Residence. Teacher Mentors will be expected to share
responsibility for ALL activities (daytime and evening)
and full involvement from Teacher Mentors is essential for
the enjoyment and success of the Camp
- Attendance at a short review meeting at the end of the Camp
- Completion of both a short pre-Camp and final day evaluation questionnaire
Qualities
- Ideally minimum of two years experience of teaching chemistry
- A desire to share your enthusiasm for chemistry with young people
- Good team worker
- Good organisational skills
- Positive attitude
Further Information
Teacher Mentors will be expected to participate in ONE Camp only per year.
Teacher Mentors will receive a modest honorarium and reasonable travel expenses will be paid.
Assistance will be available to help schools who may have difficulty providing supply cover for absence from school.
