Through the beneficence of two prestigious Salters, Sir Ambrose Nicholas and Thomas Beamond, almshouses had been originally established in Bread Street in the City of London. When these became in need of rebuilding, the Company bought land from the Earl of Essex in Watford. In October 1863, all eighteen residents moved from London to the new almshouses in Church Road which were administered by the Nicholas and Beamond Trust. A further eight houses were added in 1974. In 1992 the Salters' Company sold a 110 year lease to Warden Housing Association to manage and redevelop the almshouses. The Company retained 12 nomination rights.

Objective of the Charity

Following the sale of a 125-years lease of the Salters' Gardens site to Warden Housing Association in return for a lump sum premium of £225,000 and retention for the right to nominate residents to a minimum of 12 units of accomodation, the Charity continues to seek and assist elderly men and women over the age of 60 on limited income to live within Salters' Gardens, Watford.
