The Salters Advanced Chemistry Course for 16-19 year old students provides an innovative approach to teaching and learning advanced school chemistry in which chemical principles are developed in the context of modern applications of chemistry and the work that chemists do. The two year course is now widely used in schools and colleges in England and Wales and has been shown to be highly motivating for both students and teachers. The course leads to an A or AS award via a modular assessment scheme.
There are four course publications:
| Chemical Storylines providing the context within which chemical ideas and skills are developed | |
| Chemical Ideas systematically drawing together the chemical principles from different parts of the course | |
| Activities providing a large range of activities (including laboratory practical work as well as group exercises, data analysis, applications of information technology, and so on) | |
| Teacher's Guide providing guidance on planning, answers to questions etc. |
The course is divided into 13
units with titles such as Developing
Fuels, What's in a Medicine?
and Colour by Design. Each unit
takes about 18 hours teaching
time and centres on a frontier
application of chemistry. As
students read the Chemical Storyline
for the unit, they are directed
at appropriate points to find
out about the relevant chemistry
in the Chemical Ideas textbook
or to carry out an appropriate
Activity.
