Advanced Biology
The new Salters-Nuffield Advanced Biology Course for 16-19 year old students offers an innovative approach to the teaching and learning of Biology as it is today. The pilot for this new Course was launched in 2002 in 43 schools around the country. The Course involves extensive use of ICT which has received a very enthusiastice response from students. The two year course was launched nationwide in September 2004 and will lead to an A or AS award with a variety of assessment methods.
There are nine topics covered in the new Course each of which start with a context storyline that is related to the modern world and the application of Biology. Biological principles are introduced when required to aid understanding of the storyline so that the theory always has an obvious relevance. The topics covered are:
Topic 1 Lifestyle, Health and Risk
Topic 2 Genes and Health
Topic 3 The Voice of the Genome
Topic 4 Climate Change
Topic 5 Plants: Can’t Run. Can’t Hide
Topic 6 On the Wild Side
Topic 7 Infection, Immunity and Forensics
Topic 8 Run for Your Life
Topic 9 Grey Matter

Each year the Salters' Institute awards monetary prizes to the candidates who have achieved the highest grades in the A Level examinations.
