Equipment
Redistribution Scheme
The scheme was started in 1981 with funds provided by the Salters' Institute. The first Centre was based at the Department of Chemistry at the University of York. It collected surplus and redundant scientific apparatus from local companies and redistributed such items to schools, free of charge. Equipment was valued on a second hand basis but at no time was actual money involved. The Centre was so successful that others followed at the Universities of East Anglia, Keele, Leicester, Bath, Birmingham, Brunel, Hertfordshire, Newcastle, Middlesex, Derby and Manchester Metropolitan University.
It was the policy of the Salters' Institute to finance a Centre initially for two years. Where apparatus has continued to be forthcoming, some schemes were financed by the Institute for over 4 years. Centres were stocked with donations of redundant equipment donated by local industrial companies. Items include chemical glassware, hardware, instruments and specialised equipment which provide the support needed for the teaching of chemistry in local schools. There was no cost for the equipment but schools were responsible for its collection from the centre.
The last Centres closed in 2003. We would like to thank all the Companies who donated equipment over the years and a particular thank you to all our Centre Managers.
