Conferences for
Chemistry Teachers
Background
Chemistry Teachers' Conferences have been held regularly since the
1950s at a variety of venues around the UK. From the eighties until
2004 an annual residential conference was administered and run by
the University of York with an attendance of 60 teachers. The Conference
was co-sponsored with an industrial company, local to the area, who
was then able to provide input for the programme which involved lectures,
practical activities in laboratories and site visits. It was an opportunity
for teachers to update their skills and to increase their knowledge
and understanding of the Chemical Industry. It was also a much welcomed
opportunity for teachers from a variety of school backgrounds to meet
informally and to share ideas.
The format of Conferences and activities for teachers are currently
being reviewed, therefore there will not be a Conference held in 2005.
2004 Conference
5-8 July 2004
The Conference was held at The University of York from 5 to 8 July
2004 and offered a valuable opportunity for the professional development
of teachers of post-16 chemistry through a programme of:
| lectures | |
| practical workshops | |
| industrial site visit | |
| discussion sessions led by scientists from the Department of Chemistry |
The Conference provided the opportunity for teachers to:
| increase awareness of new developments in science education | |
| update subject knowledge | |
| learn ideas to enliven teaching from the cutting edge of research and industry | |
| discussion sessions led by scientists from the Department of Chemistry improve teaching standards by sharing ideas on good practice in chemistry teaching with other teachers from a wide range of schools | |
| meet leading researchers and industrialists |
