2012 draws ever closer with 54 Salters' Festivals of Chemistry due to take place at Universities across the UK and Ireland and 14 residential Salters' Chemistry Camps planned to be hosted at Universities in various locations across the UK. Read on to see how to enter the Festivals and apply for the Camps, and also for information on our other activities.

The Salters' Festivals of Chemistry will once again be held in partnership with The Royal Society of Chemistry in 2012. Students can look forward to hands-on practical Chemistry challenges in University labs, exciting chemical demonstrations, a Prize giving ceremony with prizes for winning schools and fun prizes and certificates for all participants.
These events are completely FREE TO ENTER (not including travel expenses) with no advance preparation required.
Schools may enter only one team of four students from:
- Year 7 and/or 8 in England and Wales
- Year P7 and/or S1 in Scotland
- Year 8 and/or 9 in Northern Ireland
- Final year primary school and/or first year secondary school in the Republic of Ireland
Students who have participated before are not eligible to participate again
Places are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis so ensure that you enter as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

The Salters' Chemistry Camps are residential events during which students can experience hands-on practical Chemistry in University labs, chemical demonstrations, a taste of life staying in University Halls of Residence and a variety of evening social activities.
Schools may nominate up to four students from:
- Year 10 in England and Wales
- S3 in Scotland
- Year 11 in Northern Ireland
- Year 3 in the Republic of Ireland
Each student will only have to pay a non-refundable fee of £95 (the actual cost of each student place is £250-£300) and the student, or their school, will be expected to cover travel expenses.
We are looking for students who are enthusiastic about Chemistry, whether they have already decided to continue studying the subject post-16 or not.

Winners of the Salters' National Awards for Science TechnIcians 2011
Do you know of a hard-working science technician whose efforts are worthy of recognition?
Nominate your technician to win a Salters' National Award for Science Technicians in 2012. The Awards are open to science technicians with five or more years experience working in schools or colleges and who currently work in schools and colleges for students up to 18 years old.
One nomination per school can be made by the Headteacher or the Head of Science

Annual Awards Ceremony 2011

The Rt Hon David Willetts and The Rt Hon Lord Butler of Brockwell, Master of the Salters' Company, presenting an Award.
This prestigious annual event held at Salters' Hall celebrates high levels of excellence within the science education sector. This year the Ceremony took place on Friday 18 November 2011.
We were very pleased to welcome the Rt. Hon. David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science who presented the Awards at the Ceremony and commented:-
“It’s been an honour to present these awards and join the Salters’ Institute in recognising the science talent we have in our schools and universities. I have been incredibly impressed by the standard of winners and hope many will go on to be leaders in the science field.”
Awards were presented for the Salters’ Graduate Prizes, Salters’ National Awards for Science Technicians, Salters-Nuffield Advanced Biology Prizes, Salters Advanced Chemistry Prizes, Salters Horners Advanced Physics (SHAP) Prizes, SHAP Teacher Prize, Salters’ City and Guilds Prizes and Salters’ Prizes for Exceptional Achievement in Physical Sciences.
Over 200 guests attended the Prizegiving Ceremony and also enjoyed a buffet luncheon.

Salters' Book Grants
Schools which teach the Salters' A Level Curricula can apply for grants of up to £500 towards books for the following courses:
Salters-Nuffield Advanced Biology
Salters Advanced Chemistry
Salters Horners Advanced Physics

The Bill Bryson Prize for Science Communication 2012

The RSC Bill Bryson Prize for Science Communication is an engaging and popular competition, designed to encourage and recognise clear science communication in schools and colleges.
The Bill Bryson Prize 2012 offers the chance to welcome the Olympics to the UK. In support of this major event the 2012 competition theme will be "Science and Sport”. This theme aims to celebrate the role that science and chemistry plays in supporting sport around the world. Boosting competitor’s performance through improved nutrition, ensuring the integrity of competition by uncovering cheats and providing sportsmen and women the latest and most advanced equipment they need to excel, all rely on the uses and applications of chemistry and offer a rich vein of scientific ideas for entrants to explore.
The RSC Bill Bryson Prize 2012 is open to students aged 5-18 and entries can be submitted in all formats, from posters to power points to puzzles! The competition will be judged in two categories, primary school and secondary school, with both individual and group entries accepted. The best entries from each category will receive a cash prize of £500 for their institution, and £100 for the winning students to share.
All UK winners will be invited to a prize-giving ceremony in London, where the awards will be made. If the best international entry comes from a country where the RSC has a presence a local ceremony in their home country may be organised. Note: all entries must be submitted in English.

The closing date for entries is 31 March 2012.
