It has always been the tradition of Livery Companies to look out for members who couldn't work, those who were sick and the elderly. The Salters' Company Almshouses were all originally established for the primary purpose of providing for disadvantaged members of the Company.
Today, The Salters' Company has two schemes within their Almshouse Trusts that provide sheltered accommodation for elderly people in Maidenhead and Watford. All applicants must meet the criteria and attend an interview with the Trustees.
The Salters' Company Almshouses at Maidenhead are comprised of eight small flats within a Grade II* Listed Building that was originally four houses. Each flat consists of one bedroom, a living room, kitchenette and bathroom and provides a comfortable home for qualifying residents.
Founded by James Smith in 1661, the original Trust was set up for the benefit of people in need living in the Cookham & Maidenhead area. Persons over the age of 50, of limited means and with connections and/or family in the local area may be considered. The premises are only suited for residents who can live independently. We regret that no pets are allowed.
The Salters' Company also has premises in Watford that are currently run by a Housing Association. In 1992, the Company granted a long lease to Warden Housing Association (now known as Home Group) who redeveloped the site for 39 residents. Under the terms of the Lease and the original Almshouse Trust, the Company retained the rights to 12 units within the development. This entitles The Salters' Company to make recommendation of elderly residents in need, over the age of 60 and with limited means who meet the criteria of The Salters' Company Almshouse Trust. We regret no pets allowed.
Residents should be capable of independent living and have friends or family within the local area. These premises are Warden Assisted five days a week (Monday to Friday) with emergency facilities out of hours. The rent is set by the Housing Association and includes a monthly maintenance and supporting people charge. This covers general maintenance and upkeep of the development and gardens, a laundry room and a communal room for regular social activities. The development is in a quiet location and enjoys a peaceful setting.
